Yes, at the entry level. Those with more experience are still in demand and there’s a massive shortage for those senior enough to be able to do all parts of the process: strategy, ideation, research, design, prototyping, and design leadership.

Unlike others, I do not recommend stressing about a portfolio. What we do is called “interaction design” which means that a static medium such as a portfolio is totally inadequate to demonstrate our process or results. The UI is just one small part of what we do. If you want to be a glorified pixel pusher then fine, build your portfolio of widgets. If you want to be sought-after strategist and someone who helps your clients think, then focus on thinking. Instead of a portfolio, document cases about how you work and solve problems, not about the deliverables.
